Heike Nowotnik’s artistic practice is based on the observation of daily activities like building, mixing, pouring, sifting, solving, scrubbing and internal human thought processes such as forgetting, remembering, dreaming and visualizing. She sees these processes happening on different layers: within human beings – and surrounding human beings. As life can be experienced in and on different layers. To express and combine both layers – to make the invisible seen- she uses installations, film, fotos and intense the work with a variety of materials like ash, clay, fabric, wood, paper, the body and metal. It is her attempt to discover and visualize invisible layers and processes.

Born in Räckelwitz (former DDR) and based in Berlin, Germany, Heike Nowotnik studied at the University for applied Sciences and Arts Ottersberg with Elke Wolf. She traveled for experience, research and work to Sweden, Vietnam, Uganda, Iceland, France and the US. Her artistic work started with a jobtraining as a draftsman in 1996.
